AM-F0200 AIRSUSPENSIONSYSTEMS
This sectionapplies to “active” air suspension systems that rely uponair as theprimary element for
suspension load-carrying support. These includeair tanks, pumps, andheight sensors to control ride
height and load carrying capacity automatically.
Theseguidelines are recommendedon “passive” air suspension systems that only supplement the
primary load carrying suspension systemor as amanual feature for adjusting for static vehicle lean.
AM-F0201 Theremust beapathway of compliancewhen theOEM suspension is replaced (
C/FMVSS,
durability,
reliability, structural, rideandhandling requirements).
AM-F0202 Drivelineanglesmust not beadversely affectedby non-OEM suspensions.
AM-F0203 Anair pressure sensor warning light and/or audiblewarning signal must be incorporated towarn the
driver of unexpectedair bagpressure loss.
Loss of load-carryingairmay result inpoor vehiclehandlingand causeair bagdamage if not
immediately corrected.
AM-F0204
Theair compressor or pumpmust beenclosed in a compartment that will adequately protect it
against damage from theenvironment suchaswater, dirt, road salt anddebris, mudpacking, and
stonepecking
Air pressure lines, fittings, and valves shouldbeprotected from stonepecking. The incorporationof
abrasion covers, suchas nylon convolute, for the nylonor plastic airlines is recommended. Anair
leak test shouldbe includedas part of the completed vehicle sign-off.
AM-F0205
A suspension jounce clearance study shouldbeperformed throughout the full rangeof suspension
travel toassureadequate clearanceof suspensionandbrakehose components. Refer toAppendixV
for amoredetaileddescriptionof a suspension jounce clearance study.
Theair supply tank, compressor or pump, and control system, are components critical to the load
carryingair support system. They shouldbe securelymountedandhave sufficient ground clearance
toprecludedamage from roadhazards or contact withunevenground.
