This sectionapplies toall 12-volt R-134aautomotive climate control systems. This sectiondoes
not apply toany other typeof refrigerant system.
E0201
OCCUPANTCOMFORTPERFORMANCE
The completed vehicleheater andair conditioning system shouldbe selectedbasedon
performance standards relatingdirectly tooccupant comfort. The standards should contain
warm-upand cool-down rates, with interior temperature limits for agivenambient temperature
andhumidity conditionwithinadesignated time span. Testingagainst these standards should
document anactual systems capability tomaintainoccupant comfort under severe climatic
conditions andduty cycles. Seek the customers choice to see if your standards are reasonable.
Relianceon claimedheat absorption rates (BTU ratings) to represent completed vehicle
occupant comfort aremisleadingand shouldbeavoided.
E0202
It is recommended that the buildermeet or exceed the current standards of the current
production vehicle line in occupant comfort performance both in heating and air
conditioning..

Installers of air conditioning systems that are combinedwith theFordair conditioning system
shouldperform the

detailed
inAppendix IV todetermine theamount of R-134A refrigerant andPAG compressor lubricant oil
required formaximum systemperformance. A sight glasswill not providea suitable indicationof
system charge inaCCOTair conditioning system. The following specifications arenecessary to
assureproper air conditioning systemperformance:
•
A4% suspended compressor oil-in-circulation ratio is tobemaintained in theair conditioner
refrigerant system. This is a4%byweight ratio, compliant toASHRAE41.4-1984.
•
Whenaddinganauxiliary system to theF-Series chassis, addedR-134A refrigerant andYN-
12-APAG compressor lubricant oil will be required tomeet theminimum4%oil-in-circulation
ratio.
•
TheE-Series chassiswith theAuxiliaryHeater andAir Conditioner Connector Package
(Options 57Land57X) are chargedwith2.75 pounds of refrigerant and13ounces of PAG
compressor lubricant oil so that additional oil shouldnot be requiredwhen theauxiliary
system is installedproperly.

•
Ford vehicles starting in the1994model year use
ONLY
R-134A refrigerant and
ONLY
YN-
12-APAG compressor lubricant oil. This refrigerant and lubricant oil arenot compatiblewith
older R-12 refrigerant andYN-9MINERALoil materials and is tobe controlledandnot
installed into the system to assureproper system function.
•
A label stating the total refrigerant charge, typeof refrigerant (R-134A), and typeof
compressor lubricant oil (PAG) used, shouldbe affixed ina conspicuous place in theengine
compartment.
•
Discharged refrigerant shouldalways be recovered. Never discharge refrigerant to the
atmosphere. Recovered refrigerantmay be reused if properly filteredanddried.
