A road test over adefined routeat normal engineoperating temperature shouldbeperformed to
properly evaluateall modifications affectingFord functional chassis systems. These systems
should includeheater andair conditioningoperation, instrument panel controls, electrical systems,
and safety functions. The test driver shouldbemadeawareof any significantmodifications to
alert him topotential problems, suchas vibrations resulting fromdrivelinemodifications, tire
changes, or wheelbase changes. It is recommended that a formal check sheet be filed for each
vehiclewhich includes functional verificationof theoperationof the speed control, brake lights,
parkingbrake, transmissiongates, hazard flasher, andother similarly important functional items.
The route shouldbeas variedas practical so as to include roughand smooth surfaces, lowand
high speeds, hills, right and left turns, etc. inorder to completely evaluate vehicle functions.

A label indicating the specific cargoand/or passenger carrying capacitymust be installed in the
completed vehicle. This label may be the standard label recommendedor requiredby a
recognized industry organization (AMD, RVIA, NTEA, MSBMA, etc.). The label is tobemounted
ina location that is readily accessibleand readableby theowner operator. Follow industry
standardmounting locationguidelineswhereavailable. Also refer toFMVSS110 (effective
September, 2004).

Sun visors/air bagwarning labels:
To complywithFMVSS208, the following requirements are tobeadhered to:
•
Eachoutboard seatingposition that provides an inflatable restraint shall havea label
permanently affixed to the sun visor for that seatingpositiononeither sideof the visor, at the
manufacturer's option.
•
Noother information shall appear on the same sideof the sun visor towhich the sun visor
warning label is affixed (208S4.5 -3).
•
If theair bagwarning label is not visiblewhen the visor is stowed (upposition), anAirbagAlert
Label shall beplacedon the visor and read "Air Bag. SeeOther Side".
•
Air bagwarning labels shouldbe installedwithprint readable fromdriver/passenger position.
•
Builders should review their process anddetermine if theair bagwarning labels are
"permanently affixed". Aheat sourcemay be required tobond thedecal to the visor.
•
A common iron canbeusedas aheat source andapieceof thick paper between the ironand
label will prevent burningof thematerial or the label(s).
•
All decals should last the lifeof the vehicle, shouldnot fadedue toUVexposureand
adhesives should last the lifeof vehicle.
•
Builderswhoarepurchasingair bagwarningdecals should refer to theCodeof Federal
Regulations 571.208 for the specific color, size, iconandwords tobe includedon the
decal(s).
Builders should reviewFMVSS208and their process to identify any other issues and to satisfy
the compliance requirements.
