HighOutputAlternator
A minimum 145-amp alternator is necessary to supply the large current demand of a modern
ambulance. The alternator must have enough capacity at high operating temperatures to meet or
exceed the entire electrical load imposed by an emergency response situation. The Chev Diesel
ambulancepreppackage comes completewith two145-ampOEM alternators.
To ensure satisfactory alternator operation, it is essential to check the alternator belts frequently for
correct tension.
Fast IdleThrottleControl
The fast idle throttle control, which is engaged by the emergency brake onGM vehicles, advances
the engine RPM so that the alternator can produce very close to its rated output when the
ambulance is at a scene. (The higherRPM also promotes better engine cooling, especially if the air
conditioner is running.) The throttle control is set tomaintain engineRPM at 1400.
The throttle control is connected such that it can only function if the vehicle is stationarywith the
gearshift selector inPark.
