HEATSHIELDS
(Refer toFigure#1–APPENDIXVI)
•
Donot remove, reposition, or otherwisemodify any existingOEMbody, chassis, or exhaust heat
shielding.
•
Additional shieldsmust be installedby the final stagemanufacturer onCutaway andChassisCab
units, andalsoonany vehiclewhere the framehas beenmodified.
•
Required shielding: Shieldsmust extend from above the right frame rail toaminimumof 20
inches inboard toat least 4 inches beyond the exhaust insideedge. Longitudinally, the shielding
must cover from4 inches forwardof theFordOEMbody floor rear edge rearward to theexhaust
outlet.
•
Material Specification: Aminimumof 18gaugeAluminizedor GalvanizedSteel.
•
Attachment andClearance:
>PreferredAttachment: All underbody heat shielding shouldbeattached to the vehiclebody and
maintainanair gapof 1/4 inch to3/8 inchbetween theheat shieldand the floor underbody.
>Optional Attachment: Attach theunderbody heat shieldingdirectly on topof theOEM frame side
rail or crossmembers. Donot drill or weldon frame rail or flanges.
>All heat shields addedmust provideaminimum clearanceof 3/4 inch toall moving components.
Ford recommends that theaboveair gapbe filledwitha fiber glass blanket insulator to further protect
theunderbody fromheat. A simpleair gapas definedabovewouldprovideoptimal insulation if it
were sealed. FiberGlass insulation (1/4 to3/4 inch thick) canbe installedby fastening it to themetal
skinned floor bottomand thenattaching theunderbody heat shielddirectly below it withnoair space.
